Just east of downtown sits a stunning Spanish Revival style church. The 17000+ sq ft church was erected starting in 1925 at a cost of over $90,000. (That's equivalent to over $1.6 million in today's dollars.) It was a masterpiece with ornate brickwork, majestic marble columns, detailed stonework, breathtaking stained glass windows, framed between twin bell towers. Inside you would find the artistry of the Italian fresco master Dante Costentino, who spent months hand painting frescos on the arched ceilings in the same manner as Michelangelo. Sadly before the church was sold the stained glass & ornate artifacts were stripped out of the building. A matching Colonial Revival rectory was added later to complement the architecture of the church. It included 6+ bedroom & 5 bathrooms with 3346 finished sq ft. In 2008 the ROCK undertook extensive renovations to the church to remove the dropped ceiling which had been added by the Mormons when they rented the building. Some of the plaster was damaged resulting in the majority of the frescos being painted over. The original floors were uncovered. A nursery was added, additional seating was added on the 2nd floor, new HVAC systems were installed. The bathrooms were redone, new kitchen downstairs, with serving area, storage areas were added, with showers downstairs, new bathrooms, the basement beams were exposed and painted. Prior to listing the property the church was tuckpointed, the gutters were replaced and new downspouts were added, drainage was addressed, the roof on the rectory was repaired, and new downspouts, and gutters added.
